Police have arrested 15 suspected members of a local gang who were allegedly involved in a deadly shooting that left one person dead and a woman critically injured.

The incident happened on Wednesday, when the gang allegedly fired at a police patrol in a remote village in the city of Hyderabad.

A resident of the area said that the incident took place in front of a house, which was ransacked and looted.

Police have registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 307 (discharging dangerous weapon in a public place), 323 (discharge of a firearm) and 35 (disorderly assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused were apprehended in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Hyderabad police, however, said the matter will be submitted to the state court.

Police Commissioner Anurag Nair said that police will probe the incident to ascertain the motive behind the incident.

The gang is said to have targeted the local police officer because he was a former police officer, said a police official.

The officer, who was part of the Hyderabad Police Crime Branch, was the only police officer on duty when the incident occurred.

Police said they are yet to get any information on the motive for the attack.

The accused are said to be members of the Bajrang Dal, a violent and well-organised criminal group in Hyderabadi.
